Most network problems come from gear that was “fine when we set it up” three offices ago. We design and configure networks properly, wired and wireless, router to firewall to switch, sized for what you run today with room for what’s next. Home offices to multi-room business spaces.
The first thing we do is measure, and it is the step almost everybody skips. Wi-Fi problems get diagnosed by guesswork and solved by buying a bigger router, which frequently changes nothing, because the signal was never the constraint. A survey of where the signal actually lands turns an argument about brands into a question with an answer.
The second thing is to stop treating the network as one undifferentiated thing. A guest phone, a card terminal, a staff laptop and a camera do not belong on the same flat network, and separating them costs configuration time rather than hardware. Most of the improvement in a well-run small network comes from decisions like that rather than from anything you can buy.

How a bad network announces itself
Networks rarely fail outright. They get slightly worse for eighteen months until everybody has quietly built a workaround.

Networks across Waterloo Region and Guelph
The buildings here make specific trouble. Century houses and converted commercial space in Kitchener, Galt and Uptown Waterloo have plaster and lath, brick interior walls and the occasional bit of old foil-backed insulation, all of which stop a signal in ways drywall does not. The advice that works in a new subdivision is wrong in those rooms, and one more router in the hallway does not fix it.
Out toward Elmira, St. Jacobs, Wellesley and Ayr the constraint moves outside the building. Where the incoming connection is rural and variable, the job is often to make the local network resilient enough that a fluctuating line stops taking the whole office down with it, and to prove to somebody which of the two is actually at fault.
In the industrial pockets of Cambridge and Guelph the recurring version is a machine on the shop floor that has to stay on the network, cannot be updated, and must not be reachable from anything else. That is a segmentation problem and it is very solvable, but only if somebody says it out loud first.
