Big-box stores sell what’s on the shelf. We start with what you do, the software you run, the years you want out of it, the budget you’re working with, and spec the machine to that. Home systems, custom builds, or a fleet of matching workstations for the office: we source it, build or configure it, and hand it over working.
The part that usually saves the most money is the question nobody asks in a shop: how long do you need this to last? A machine bought for three years and a machine bought for seven are different machines, and the cheaper one is often the wrong one. Spending forty dollars more on memory today can be the difference between a computer that ages gracefully and one that needs replacing in year four.
The other half is what gets left out. Plenty of what a retail box is priced around, a discrete graphics card, a processor two tiers up, storage sized for a photographer, does nothing at all for somebody running a browser, a mail client and an accounts package. We would rather spend that budget on the things you will actually feel every day, which are usually memory, a solid-state drive and a monitor that does not give you a headache by four o’clock.

Replacing a computer that had two good years left is an expensive mistake, and so is nursing one that has been costing you an hour a week. These are the signs that usually mean the decision has arrived.
- It takes longer to start up than it takes you to make coffee.
- The software you need for work has stopped supporting the version of Windows on it.
- It will not take any more memory, and memory is what it is short of.
- You have already paid for one repair and a second one is now being quoted.
- The battery lasts twenty minutes and a replacement costs a third of a new laptop.
- You are buying for somebody starting next month and there is nothing spare.
- Three people are sharing two machines and the third is working evenings to get on one.
- It runs fine, and honestly there is nothing wrong with it. That is an answer too.

A computer is one of the few things people still buy that arrives as a job rather than a product. Somebody has to move the files, reconnect the printer, sign into the mail, find the licence key for the software the business runs on, and work out why the scanner that worked yesterday does not. That is the part we do, at your desk, anywhere from Kitchener and Waterloo out to Guelph, Cambridge and the townships.
It is also why there is no showroom. A store front in this region is rent that ends up inside the price of the hardware, and it buys you a room with boxes in it. The money is better spent on the machine and on the hour somebody spends making it work in the room it will live in.

Need help deciding what to buy in the first place? That’s IT consulting. Not sure the old machine is done? A repair might be the cheaper answer, we’ll tell you which.
Nothing here is bought on your behalf without you seeing the reason for it. You get the specification, the price and the argument for each part, and if you want to take that list and buy it somewhere else, it is your list. Most people do not, because the price of the box was never the expensive part of getting a new computer working.
